Regional Jewellery Project

Places and Pieces is a joint Craft Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria project developed to engage a wide range of students and community members in the craft of jewellery making.

While the idea of ‘Place’ can be interpreted in many ways, within this project artists and participants have been guided by one common definition and directive – to create works commenting on, materially connected to and reflective of their own notion of ‘place’ in geographic and personal terms.  Led by three makers from Craft Victoria’s professional membership base, students and emerging communities within Bendigo and Castlemaine have been encouraged to explore and develop their creative skills via the production of jewellery pieces constructed from non-precious material found within their own localities.  Workshops and planning days have focused on intergenerational sharing of culture and knowledge and have facilitated community strengthening benefits to participants and greater local population. The project has inspired artistic excellence and innovation amongst all participants as well as providing a unique opportunity for both students and emerging community members to work with established professional artisans.

A selection of works produced during the project will be showcased at Craft Victoria as part of the enCOUNTER 24/7 exhibition program.

Participating artists

Anna Davern Anna Davern

Davern completed her undergraduate degree in Jewellery and Object Design at Sydney College of the arts in 1993 under the tutelage of Margaret West. Her post graduate studies and subsequent Masters degree (2003) were completed in Gold and Silversmithing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) where she was mentored by Carlier Makigawa, Robert Baines and Louise Weaver. In 2004 she co-curated (with jeweller Vicki Mason) Cross Pollination, an exhibition of contemporary Australian and New Zealand jewellery at Craft Victoria, as part of the South Project a 3 year project initiative by Craft Victoria focusing on artistic exchanges between countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Davern works from her studio in Flinders Lane Melbourne and exhibits regularly at e.g.etal in Melbourne. She has held 2 major solo exhibitions at Craft Victoria and has been represented in numerous Australian and international group exhibitions. Davern is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and participated in residencies in both Sydney and Tallinn, Estonia. She has written reviews for the Australian publications; Object Magazine, Artlink and Craft, has taught at the Estonian Academy of Art and currently teaches at the Box Hill Institute of Technical and Further Education (NMIT) More information can be found at www.annadavern.com.au and www.davernator.blogspot.com.
Tamara Marwood

Tamara Marwood
Tamara Marwood is a professional visual artist based in Central Victoria who works primarily in contemporary textiles and Works on Paper. She has been selected as a finalist in numerous national award exhibitions, including the prestigious National Works on Paper award at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and is currently the City of Bendigo Artist in Residence at the Specimen Cottage Studio. This year she was an Artist in Residence at the Kyneton Museum wallowing in their extraordinary textile collection. Her next exhibition entitled Dirty Denim, is with Verity Lougoon, a sustainable textile artist, at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre. She is also fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a day a week in 2011 with new refugee women residing in Deer Park. The Glory Box Project is a community arts residency with the Coptic Women’s Association to generate dialogue around and investigate the possibilities for the renewal of the traditional aesthetics connected with glory boxes in Coptic culture.

Sarah Fowler

Sarah Fowler
Sarah Fowler completed a Bachelor of Arts and Honours Degree in Craft Design and Metalsmithing at Monash University in 1996, and a Diploma in Gemology. After completing her degree she began a successful career as a fine jeweller both creating a retail range of jewellery for Makers Mark Jewellery Gallery and Myer Melbourne. Alongside her production business she has maintained a diverse exhibition practice and has been shown in galleries from the Meat Market Craft Gallery to the National Gallery of Victoria.

Sarah uses traditional silversmithing techniques (repousse, raising and fusing) to create jewellery that is boldly contemporary, yet embedded in fundamental techniques and timeless influences. Her background in jewellery design, and years of professional experience with respected jewelers, has given her a strong technical foundation on which to create inspired and what she hopes are inspiring pieces of art.
