Renowned textile artist develops new body of work for Craft Victoria.
Liz Williamson: New Textiles presents a new body of work, playing on ideas of shelter and memory, containment and bodily protection. The exhibition makes connections between clothing and the body; experimenting with different weaves, textures and structures, whilst exploring visual and conceptual territory.
Williamson’s Loop and Cascade series are neckpieces; a hybrid between a wrap and jewellery. They explore notions of shelter and memory on several levels, as their circular shapes drape the body inviting enquiry and a desire to know what is contained within.
Williamson’s Sac and Remembrance series, large wall-based shapes, evoke connections with enclosure, carrying and storage and create a place for hiding, seclusion and security. Woven in a double layer structure using plant-dyed fabric (some reused, some new), these works also reference the rich tradition of weaving rag rugs.
